The internet is divided into two main sections known as the surface web and the deep web. Whilst the latter sounds like something out of a spy thriller you’re probably accessing the deep web significantly more often than you might expect.

In this article we’re going to dive into the deep web, including how to access it and if it’s illegal.

What is the Deep Web?

The deep web is simply parts of the internet that are not indexed by search engines. The majority of the deep web is simply regular websites that require users to create accounts to access their content.

For example, if you have ever used an intranet or internal network this would be considered to be part of the deep web.

How to Get on the Deep Web?

To access the deep web, you do not need any specialised software or browsers. The only thing you may need is login credentials for particular sites or direct URLS.

This could include accessing:

Online databases: Academic research papers, government records, etc.

Private networks: Intranets, password-protected websites, etc.

Dynamic content: Pages that change frequently, like email inboxes or news feeds.

Paywalled content: Subscription-based services like Netflix or Hulu.

Is Deep Web Illegal?

The deep web itself is not illegal, in fact the majority of what is technically the deep web is completely legal and used by many of us day to day.

It's a huge portion of the internet that isn't indexed by search engines. This includes completely legal sites like online banking portals, academic databases, and internal company networks

Many get this confused with the dark web that uses special software and networks to hide user identities and website locations.. This anonymity means the dark web is often used to commit cyber crimes.

Although accessing the dark well is not technically illegal, obviously participating in illegal activities on the dark web is still a crime and can lead to serious legal consequences.

Deep Web vs Dark Web

The deep web and dark web are often used synonymously. However, technically, they are not the same thing.

The dark web is a part of the deep web  that uses specialized software and networks to hide user identities and website locations. It requires this software, such as Tor browser, to access.

The deep web on the other hand is simply parts of the of the internet that are not indexed by search engines.

How to Access Deep Web on iPhone

To access the deep web on your iPhone, you don't need a specialized browser like Tor. The deep web consists of content that isn't indexed by search engines, but it's still accessible through regular web browsers like Safari.

You can access specific websites within the deep web by using their direct URLs or simply inputting login credentials.
